Ithaca, the island which is famous because of Odysseus, is found to the southern part of Lefkada, near the north-eastern coasts of Kefallonia. The island consists of two terrains that are connected with an oblong isthmus. This is actually where the beautiful gulf of Dexion is set. You may hear the citizens call it “Laerti’s Gulf” as well. Vathi, which is the capital of Ithaca, is built on an altitude of 10 m. It’s a well protected and picturesque harbour which is also identified with the port Forkis that was mentioned in Homer’s epic. A small island, that of Sotiras (also known as Lazareto), stands in the entry of the harbour and the temple of Metamorphosis that is built there really worth to be seen. In Vathy, many are the institutions of public benefit that were erected with the economic contribution of rich ship-owners or other people who had left Ithaca and lived abroad. During the earthquakes of 1953 the city suffered serious destructions. However, it was then reconstructed according to the same traditional Ionian style, so it didn’t lose any of its historical aspect. The restored metropolis, sample of exceptional art, along with the ruins of Venetian castle and the home where the hero Odysseus Androutsos was born are some of the historical monuments you should visit. Spend some time to the Archaeological Museum where you’ll have the chance to admire ceramic, cult vessels, work of miniature art, cupreous objects, currencies and many more and finish with the Library of Ithaca with the rich collection of infrequent books. There’s an area near the city, where, according to the fable, Odysseus hid his gifts from Feakes on the way back to homeland. Circumnavigating the coasts of Ithaca from its northern cape Melissa, we meet the “Bight of Horrors” (Ormos Frikon), woodland which in a way reminds of European countryside. At a conspicuous place of the port there are two stone mills, but also the statue of poet Lorentzos Mavilis. Here, in 1944, local rebels accomplished with very little means to occupy the german boat “Antouanetta”. Besides these, the region also has a rich fauna so it becomes the meeting point for the nature lovers. 10 km more northern one finds the picturesque mountainous village Stavros. The street leads to a beautiful gulf with a nice beach and a cavern with archaeological importance, since there was discovered a piece of earthen feminine mask of 2nd p.H century. Ithaca is the island that exhales the mystery of Odyssey’s season. It’s the ideal place for relaxing vacation and intellectual searches.
